Água de Pena

With a surface area of only 5.15km², Água de Pena is the smallest of all the parishes in Machico. About 11% of the population of the municipality lives in Água de Pena.

The Parish

The origin of the name Água de Pena is unknown, but there are several theories. The most popular theory comes from a legend about a fresh water spring that emerged from under a large rock.

The runway extension, one of the most important works for the socioeconomic development of the region was built in the parish of Água de Pena.

Complexo Desportivo de Água de Pena is probably the best sports complex of its kind on the Island. Besides its variety of sports areas, the surrounding structure involves visitors in a brilliant work of civil engineering.

Although the golfing adventure starts in Santo António da Serra, a large part of the lawn is situated in Água de Pena.

Santa Beatriz is the patron saint of Água de Pena. Along with the parish church dedicated to the saint, the beautiful and historical Fonte do Seixo are two impressive landmarks worthy of a visit.

Água de Pena is the lowest of the five parishes that make up the municipality. To get to the centre, you only need to climb to the 100-metres altitude.

Due to its low altitude and proximity to the Airport, Água de Pena presents excellent conditions for Plane Spotting.
