Madeira is an excellent destination for plane spotters, as it is possible to watch the full process from landing to take-off.

There are several spots in Machico where the hair-raising moments can be observed.

The airport has a 2781-metre-long runway, of which 1100 metres extend out over the Atlantic Ocean. In 2004, engineer Segadães Tavares was awarded the OStrA - Outstanding Structure Award by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), the highest recognition in the civil engineering world for his work on the extension.
